Welcome to Wisconsin Commercial Floriculture Minimize

You can't get to the top of the mountain, if you don't reach base camp first!

Finally, we have a commercial herbaceous website up and running.  I still have the same goals for this site that I started with back in November, but my plans have scaled back somewhat  as I have had to learn how to make things work. As noted in the headline,  I have adopted the mantra "You can't get to the top of the mountain if you don't reach the base camp first". So, in an effort to get this out and going so that I have some sort of results, I am working on getting to base camp first.

I am looking forward to working on this outreach option and with your help making it a useful tool for you and your business.

Introducing Myself

In August, of 2007, I was hired by the Horticulture Department of the University of Wisconsin as a faculty associate with two responsibilities:  Provide outreach education to the herbaceous ornamental industry in Wisconsin and Recruit and teach horticulture courses to students in the UW's Farm and Industry Short Course program.

In brief, my background is:

  • Wisconsin native, raised on a dairiy farm in Vernon County
  • Undergraduate degree in ornamental horticulture from Cornell University
  • Classwork at the University of Minnesota
  • Master's degree in Organizational Communications from Ithaca College
  • Horticultural work experience in  the University, County and small business arenas
  • 15 years of managing a small business
  • A life-long interest in perennials, trees and shrubs

From November, 2007 through March 2008, I developed curriculums for and taught three courses: Introduction to Plant Science; Identification and Culture of Herbaceous Plants; Identification and Culture of Woody Plants. With the short course program on hiatus now it is time to devote more time to the second half of my position, namely the outreach.
